Back in February there was a thread discussing an annoyance of Word styles that rabidly spawn other styles suffixed with "Char", so that, for example, "Heading1" might eventually become "Heading1 Char Char Char". The thread didn't come to any conclusion on the cause or how to avoid / deal with the problem.

I just found this website which offers the explanation and a macro solution: http://homepage.swissonline.ch/cindymeister/MyFavTip.htm#CharStyl

Apparently Word creates these "linked" styles when paragraph styles are applied to a selection of characters rather than a whole paragraph.

Another explanatory thread here: http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.word.formatting.longdocs/browse_frm/thread/408d144d348066cd/108674c68dd36c34?q=word+%22char+char+char%22&rnum=49&hl=en#108674c68dd36c34
