Thanks, all, who got back to me. The problem changed a few hours ago, when
it became apparent that there were two copies of each of the files that I
was concerned about: one with a broken file name, and one with the correct
file name. Luckily, it was easy to tell which were broken, and I could just
remove them to a separate folder. It was much less slog than I expected, but
it took a while to figure out what was going on. The most important tool I
used was the Windows Explorer search tool, plus the brain of a developer.
