Sorry, Fred, I disagree. Simplified forms for commonly used terms are
very much a part of the streamlining process that goes on over time.
Would that we could see this happening more quickly on some of our
confusing and archaic spellings!

In the case of "e-mail" I strongly suspect this phenomenon is being
hurried up by the fact that the average person is not a touch typist,
and the reach to the hyphen character on most keyboards is for them
not very convenient.

I agree with Mike that "e-mail" is becoming quite dated, along with
many of the "marketing-speak" terms such as prefacing nearly anything
with "i" to denote Internet-related.
