While I never got my project into production, I did research and prototype
using DocBook at a job. The advantages to using DocBook arethat it is
detailed, documented, and ready for use. These advantages make it very
attractive. There is an O'Riley book that documents DocBook, which I found
extremely useful.

As to the tool I was using, that was FrameMaker 7.0. I found it very
flexible and easy to use. I didn't get far enough along to go into
transformations, but there are several XSLT editors that should do the
trick for you.
