My thoughts:

Find out if there is anyone who cares and explain why this is a bad
thing and then discuss ways to remedy the situation. If there is no such
person in authority, I'd forward the proper doc to the engineer and
recommend he forward it to the customer with something along the
lines..."here is our documentation covering the information I already
sent you in the email"
