Many thanks for the replies and comments about the example I gave. And
yes, there is an illustration that accompanies the procedure.

I eventually decided to drop the explanation about how far focus / near
focus relates to clockwise / counter-clockwise, since that would require
an explanation from which point of view I define clockwise /
counter-clockwise, which in turn would make an originally simple
procedure over-complicated. A typical user scenario is probably that
s/he picks up the camera, turns the focus ring clockwise or
counter-clockwise until the image becomes sharp on the screen, rather
than pondering about which direction to turn the focus ring.

So in the end it became:

"Turn the focus ring clockwise or counter-clockwise to adjust focus."
