Not strictly "technical writing," but my husband works as a proofreader in
a law firm that specializes in the medical field. They do a lot of
seminars for hospitals and other medical groups and are involved in
litigation as well. There are actually two full-time proofreaders at the
firm which has about 8 lawyers. He proofs for format, sense. grammar and
consistency as well as company standards. Sometimes he rewrites a paragraph
or some sentences, but always gets an OK from the lawyer first. By the way,
my husband's background is journalism and he has worked as a reporter and
an editor of a small paper. He previously did the same type of proofreading
in two of the "Big 6" accounting firms.

There are people who reshape the world by force or argument, but the cat
just lies there, dozing; and the world quietly reshapes itself to suit his
comfort and convenience.
