There's a middle ground between hand coding and a WYSIWYG editor: an
HTML editor such as Bluefish. In HTML editors, you can add the code
from a menu, but you're still working with the source code. The result:
you remove the drudgery, but can still immediately see what you are
doing. Most HTML editors also have a link to your default browser so
that you can see the results of your coding.
