I'm not saying that OS is *not* a good idea (that I
would like to see more of, for the reasons you quoted
plus many others). And I'm not a scarcity thinker; I'm
not worried that my income will vanish as lesser-paid
workers learn free tools that replace my expensive
tools - I believe there's plenty for everyone, done
properly. In fact, the company I am with is developing
an ultra-low-cost computer and software to bring
computing to more people.
Still, OS software is being developed largely by
people and companies who make money from products
they can sell. Everything can't be 'free.' My point
was that there are lots of things that people need,
but someone else's need does not automatically equate
to my responsibility, or guilt.
