A bunch of #2 pencils, a big eraser, and some paper (I
prefer the back side of used copier paper - it is so
readily available)are the best tools for getting
organized. I use these to rapidly draw and verify
essential functional and data models.

The understanding that I get from these models really
helps to to properly modularize (i.e, organize) my
work.

Visio and other software tools are a REAL initiative
killers when your trying to accurately and rapidly
perform analysis as a basis for documentation
organization! (Time is always so tight.)

A very famous functional modeling technique (read:
task analysis technique) purposefully espouses the use
of curved lines in drawing flows. Reason: To get the
analyst (or tech writer) away from spending too much
time drawing pretty pictures on the computer and get
them out interfacing with the end-user.
