The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Articles are always an issue with acronyms. The ones that are often
sounded out are most heinous.
Personally I would either use "an" or work around it. "... a single SQL
server instance..."
There is no guarantee that anyone will sound out the acronym and
pronounce it "sequel". I have been writing databases on and off since
1988 (ouch) and never liked that pronunciation. There are too many
other "sequels" (including database products from the late 80s when I
was young and impressionable). Personally I think pronouncing acronyms
is usually a bad idea. Professionally I think it is *definitely* a bad
idea, especially in an era of wide internationalization.
