That suggests the problem is with your folder options settings. In any
Windows Explorer or folder window, click Tools > Folder Options. In the
dialog, click the View tab.

Now take a good look at the list of Advanced settings. I believe that, by
default, Do not show hidden files and folders is selected. Change that to
Show hidden files and folders.

And while you're there, I strongly recommend deselecting Hide extensions for
known file types, too. Hidden extensions have fooled many people into
double-clicking a file with a name that looks like somefile.txt or
somefile.jpg, but is really somefile.txt.exe or somefile.jpg.scr.

A little knowledge may be dangerous, but not as dangerous as complete
ignorance. ;-)
