First, good luck with your new career! Second, salary
can vary significantly with location. For example,
using Victoria, Canada as an index:
Victoria wage: 1.00
Vancouver wage: 1.25
Toronto wage: 1.50?
So I'm told. I do know that TWs make significantly
more in Vancouver than Victoria, even though we're
less than 50 km apart. I know one who worked in Van,
charging CDN$50-75/hour (less for nonprofits). She
worked a job out of San Francisco for awhile at
$75/hour as a senior writer doing primarily analysis
and facilitation. In Victoria, she struggles to get
$45/hour. Another guy in Vic makes $65K as a senior
tech writer. One in Phoenix, AZ: USD$30/hour as an
experienced TW.
In addition, big companies often pay more, at least
initially, in my experience.
A fair starting wage...in Vic, probably 35-40K, but
I'm guessing based upon my current wages.
