Whether it is true or not, there are a lot of people who
have a vested interest in making potential employees
believe that the data on salary.com is inflated (e.g. every
hiring manager in the country). It's the same thing that
happens when you try to use Blue Book data when you
are negotiating a trade-in allownace at a car dealer; it's
in the dealer's interest to undermine your belief in the
data.

On the other hand, what would be the benefit to salary.com
to post inflated salary data? Two of their three types of
target customers (paying customers, that is) are companies
and enterprises who need to analyze and manage salary and
compensation information for thier location and market
segment. And I think it is very safe to say that salary.com
would have very few of those customers if the information
they provide reflects above-market rates for labor and causes
employers to over-pay for labor.

Word on the street: Salary.com gives salaries that an
FTE can expect working for the bluest of well-of blue
chip companies. Such companies are becoming
increasingly rare in places like Cleveland.
