where to volunteer to get tech writing experience...

Hello, can anyone recommend a company or organization where one could
volunteer to do technical writing? I'm finding it a challenge landing
that first position (especially without anything to put into my
portfolio).

Also, when interviewing for a position, what do most people put their
documents in when presenting their portfolio to a potential employer
(as they say, first impressions count and I'm sure a plain folder
wouldn't cut it when presenting a sample of my work to an employer).
