Re: Opposite of "interactively"
If someone has used the term "interactively" to lead off a bullet-point
about a shell that prompts the user for needed info, then what "-ively" word
can I use to lead off the contrasting bullet about the command-line option,
where there are no prompts and you pile all the arguements into the one
command??
Computer-historically, the opposite of "interactively" (as in a terminal session where you enter commands and get an instant reaction from the system) is "batch processing".
My first computer experience at school was with early Commodore PET/CBM machines, and I was pretty confused by the IBM system at university until I understood that you had to write input data in a file, send it with the program, then get the program output (and errors ;) back in a file.
I'll leave it to the native speakers to come up with a grammatical form equivalent to "interactively".
