Once again I am SO glad I use open-source tools! :-) Personally, I
have no reason not to assume the original poster is working in a
qualified academic institution.

Seriously though, I have a question. There are lots of free PDF
writers, but AFAIK none that creates TOC and internal links the way the
Adobe product does. Supposedly OO.org 2.0 does, but I haven't tried it
yet.

Acrobat isn't a mystery; the specs are published. So what does it take
to create a navigable TOC and internal links? I imagine a tool could be
coded from the specs, but is there an open-source tool already built
that does this?

Personally I don't care for browsable PDFs. PDFs are for printing, html
is for browsing. But sometimes clients request browsable PDFs.
