I'm not sure if you used the typing as an example of how slow your
network is, or if you're judging a client-server solution based on
having to type into it all the time.

Certainly if your network's transfer rate is very slow, you have to be
wary of network solutions. Still, I've never seen that sort of network
response except on dial-up connections. Granted, you may have that! With
the LAN I use, I usually find that local background processes are the
cause of my delays (there's a great story I can tell about *that*!).

CVS uses a server repository, which as I have said can reside on your
local machine. You only connect to it to manage files. Normally, you
work on local copies of your files. When you need to establish them as
the new version, you do a check in which transfers them to the
repository. That might be a slow process, but I don't do it myself more
than once a day.

Just trying to help *you* avoid issues that come from trying to *avoid*
issues you don't really have...

Well, I think my 1,000 GB HDD will be sufficient for some time...

Let's just say that I am a very fast typist and quite often need to wait
for network hardware and software keep up at the same speed. And since I
work in a large organisation I really don't have any influence over the
network design.
