I'm the lone tech writer in an old school world. After working here for eight months, my use of "one space after a period" is now under scrutiny but none other than those in charge of documentation. I can't wait to see what's next. Like, why did I not use the carbon paper in the copier?

For the most part, the customer could care less how many spaces after a period you use as long as your consistent throughout the document, and that is even questionable. If the person scrutinizing the number of spaces happens to be the same person who signs you paycheck, then I'd say you found the only "audience" you have to please concerning spacing after periods. Just enter what he/she wants in your style guide, so if they change their minds on the next edit, you can gently say that you were following their previous suggestions and ask if you need to change the style guide. Then go out and have a beer and good laugh.
