In the organizations I've worked with, the PMO was concerned with exactly
that -- managing the elements of the project to keep it on schedule and on
budget. They often didn't care whether there were 2 revisions to a pub, or 3
revisions, as long as those revisions were completed on the predicted
schedule. They did't get involved in editing, dealing with SMEs, or any
other aspect of the actual work. The only thing they were concerned with was
whether the tasks were getting done, the dependancies were working out, and
that the resources available were adequate to get the job done.

Not such a bad thing. Some times managers are great at people and/or
technical content, but fail to keep a project on track. Having the PMO
responsible for meetings, updates, and the finicky details can make life a
lot easier for you.
