While in the AF (1980), I managed about a dozen dumb terminals, running
300 baud (*not* BPS but *true* baud) over unconditioned dial-up phone
lines some 1200 miles to a mainframe in Illinois. We had an
80-character sign-on (military - no more explanation necessary) and
60-SECOND time-out for each log-on. And, I was trying to get engineers
to log-on to these dumb terminals - 3 bad log-ons and the whole thing
was locked out. Nightmare!

We had the same problem except we were in Iceland (Naval Security Group-Keflavick) and trying to communicate with a base in Scotland. Every time the aurora came up we'd go down, which meant we were down darn near every night. So, instead of protecting the world from the evil empire, we'd drink coffee, read books and play card games.

A Z80!!!! That was back in the days of 6502s (Apple IIs) and when a HW writer actually wrote things like "when the output of AND Gate U11 goes high the ripple counter....." and when you could take a cooler full of beer and food to see a concert in Golden Gate Park for free (Jefferson Airplane, Santana, etc.) and when alligator clips went by another name....sigh....memories, just memories now...and really vague memories.
