I think some of you here have a rough idea of my capabilities as a technical
writer. I'm a good end-user writer, but I have no experience with software
development documentation. I would be truly a novice -- but maybe it's
something that a novice could pick up quickly?

Question: Can I learn this by doing it? Is the RUP process intuitive? Am I
just out of my league here, and should I say so upfront and not waste his or
my time on further discussion of this project?

Only you can know your own qualifications and speed
in picking up new techniques and language. However,
no offense or anything but this thread started because
you were amazed at the high hourly wage. I would guess
that the wage was higher than the prevailing norm
because it involved more technical involvement than
usual. I'm not sure they'd be willing to pay that
wage per hour for someone learning on the job but
again, hard to say without knowing your experience
or just what's involved in RUP or really with the
job itself compared to a non-acronym tech writing
job. Obviously all you can do is be honest with
them about your qualifications and let them decide.
