I got a response from Sarah O'Keefe with an extensive explanation -- Thanks, Sarah!

Also thanks to Carol [cll01821 -at- lycos -dot- com] for her clarification.

Hi Guy,

FrameMaker tables have both implicit and explicit properties. The
explicit properties are in the Table Designer. The implicit properties,
which include table width, number of columns, and default paragraph
tags, are not shown in the Table Designer.

When you create a table and save the table format by clicking Update All
in the Table Designer, the implicit properties are saved as defaults for
the table. When you insert a new table, the "last-known" implicit
properties are used.

So. In other to make your tables work properly, you need to set up three
tables styles as you have done. Create a sample table for each table
style. Then, adjust the width of the single cell to go all the way to
the right margin and click Update All in the Table Designer. This will
save the correct table width as a default with that table style.

To test your format, insert a new table with the updated table style and
see what you get.

I'm not sure what's going on with the right indent, but I *think* that
the implicit table width overrides the explicit right indent.

HTH.

Sarah
