I second it. I made an HR complaint at my current company against this horrid, horrid, horrid man (not a boss, an underling in another department who has issues with women in power) whose mother should be ashamed of him and now *I'm* the invisible elephant. He was later discovered to be doing much more horrid things and is no longer here, but I am left holding a much worse bag than if I had just kept my head down and said "Thank you sir, may I have another."

What I find curious is that Cathy's company hasn't yet realized that
they have a real problem with this manager and dealt with it, perhaps
regarding him as an 'invisible' elephant in the room. This I suspect
does not bode well for resolving the problem internally. Engaging
outside agencies to resolve it, while sometimes resulting in
satisfaction, can be a costly and protracted process. I have known
people who have gone the legal route and while winning in court, paid a
cost in terms of legal fees, time, and employment opportunities. My
inclination would be to keep my head down and move on at the earliest
opportunity. But then maybe that's just me.

I don't think I would ever advise someone in a situation like this to
play
hardball (if someone who had already decided to asked *how,* that
would be different). My observation of others who have gone the
hardball
route is that in some cases they managed to make things better for those
who came after them, but even if things turned out the way they hoped
the experience still resulted in bad feelings about the fact they had to
do
it at all and they ended up leaving their employers fairly soon after.
Not
to say you shouldn't take a stand, just don't do so believing that the
problem will be resolved and you will automatically be happy with your
job again.

LOL. Because it's easy to talk hardball when you don't actually have
to
*do* it and *live* with it.
