Joe has given excellent advice, worth clipping and saving. I'd do
everything he recommended, and just add two observations -

(1) If you don't have a web site to house your resume and portfolio,
get one! Hosting is cheap. (I've got one at
http://barry.campbell-online.com, with my portfolio stashed behind a
password-protected directory; my wife is at
http://caren.campbell-online.com; there's a blog at
http://campbell-online.com, and we're working on sites for the dogs
and the cat. We host with Yahoo! for something like $12 a month, but
there's absolutely no need to pay that kind of money for hosting if
you don't want to; much cheaper deals abound.)

(2) At least in my neck of the woods (NYC metro area) contracting work
is fairly plentiful right now, and staff positions are picking up.
Assuming that this trend extends nationally, this is *not* a terrible
time to get laid off (there's never a good time.) While you may not
be able to find a comparable staff job in 30 days, I am close to
dead-certain that you can find a decent short-term contracting gig in
that timeframe.

Meanwhile, network your butt off.

Courage!
