I used to work in a dot-com. The manager would often talk about
"productizing" our software.
Here are the definitions I came up with for the steps to productization:
Thoughtware -- One developer thinks about the software
Vaporware -- A screenshot of the potential software exists in Photoshop.
Development -- A long period of time when the software is being worked on
Testing -- Another long period of time which ends the day before the rollout
Productized -- It's on the market and at least one person has bought it.
Another cute dot-com story: My nephew worked for a dot-com that spent it's
Venture Capitalist millions to develop some software. Only one sale was
ever made, for the grand total of $24.27. When the business went down in
flames, someone made t-shirts for all the employees that read "$24.27."
