Glad to see another Alaskan on the site (I'm from Fairbanks, wife from Juneau).Living in Alaska does taint people to distances. I knew people who commuted 40 miles each way by snowmobile in the winter and others that skied less than five miles. (They would do this until the outside temp dropped below 50 below nuthing, then drive.) I believe that the quality of the commute affects you more than the miles driven. For example, a ten mile highly stressful commute each way affects both your creativity and ability to relax more than a 30 mile laid back drive on mostly country roads. (A ten mile commute at 65 below is something totally different.) However, with that said, I try to limit my commutes to 30 miles or less.
On a related note, I run into people all the time who have no
comprehension of distances for Alaska, especially when they come from
the smaller states. Most people just don't get the humor about going
on summer vacation in Alaska, driving 8 hours one way (not including
roadless Juneau of course), and STILL being only halfway across the
state. Eight hours anywhere else is virtually a guarantee to get
across at least one state if not three or four.
My shortest commute in Alaska was three miles, my longest was 30 miles. Commuting to jobs in Fairbanks was a lot easier and less stressful than commuting to jobs in Anchorage. These are not much different than what I've done since returning to "America" in 2003. Commuting to work in Vermont is far less stressful than the commute in Albuquerque, which explains why I no longer live in Albuquerque...besides the lack of trees and water.
BTW: For those wanting a wonderful drive, it's over 3,000 miles from the West Coast to Fairbanks, AK....plan on taking 10 days and a lot of bug repellent.
