I would do this differently

1. Create your document with a wide left margin.
2. Create a style (Sidehead) with:
- the typographical specs you need
- a Frame defining the left and right margins of the sidehead
3. Format your sidehead with the sidehead style. If the text of the sidehead
is too long to fit on one line, it will wrap within the frame

No need to hide the closing paragraph mark, and the layout is the same
irrespective of whether or not you are displaying hidden text.
