Marni, I use ClearCase the way you do, but I've been frustrated by the level of "compatibility". I work normally within RoboHelp but have to go to ClearCase Explorer and check files out whenever Robo complains that they are read-only (or before I edit, if I know what I'm going to touch ... but more often I lose track and wait for Robo to complain).

I believe the idea behind X5 "compatibility" with ClearCase was that we should be able to check files out easily *within* RoboHelp, just like the developers do in Visual Studio, but we were never able to get that to work. X5 is considerably better than X4 was, just because it does tell you when you're trying to write to a read-only (i.e. checked in) file, but working with ClearCase and RoboHelp together is tedious and error-prone for us (and doesn't work any better nor differently from working with Visual SourceSafe and RoboHelp, which we also do). Have you got it working better than we do?

Absolutely! I use ClearCase for version control of all my X5 projects. I
know some people use ClearCase as a sort of safe receptacle, checking the
entire project into ClearCase only after all their edits and after the
project is complete. However, I use it just as the developers. I keep all
my files in ClearCase. I open the .xpj file in ClearCase Explorer. I also
use ClearCase labels for versioning. And, my developers (actually my Build
Engineer) does all the help generation using the files in ClearCase. Our
generated help is also stored in ClearCase, however it is NOT added to
source control due to the nature of the files.
