Agreed. To my American ears, "hence" does sound slightly old fashioned,
although not wrong. Words such as "therefore/thus/so" certainly sound
more natural to me. I suspect "hence" was more common in American
writing 50 years ago than today.

"Hence" may be fine for the British, along with their "whilst" and
"amongst," which caused a furor here some time ago! (Barely ever hear
an American use either of those...)
