I've noticed that //sometimes// it is possible to
improve the boss, generally by thinking, "What can I do
that will make the boss look good? What will keep him
out of trouble?" Other times that won't work--the
hair is too pointy, or the whole enterprise is doomed
from above or from outside.

I've followed an approach for the last 8 years or so and has done much to make me and my boss look good.

"Promise 5% more than the boss wants and deliver 5% more than promised."
