Well, as a long-time tech-whirler who's been lurking for several years,
this question is specific enough to my everyday work that I'm coming out of
lurk mode for it!

My team uses CVS (with the Tortoise GUI front-end) as our version control
system for the Robohelp projects we do for one of the company's web-based
product lines. Not our choice; the development team uses it for their code,
and we check in our Robohelp projects so they can be included in the build
process for the product, which has context-sensitive help.

We've had our share of headaches, many of which I wanted to blame on
CVS(which does have some known problems), but I've since heard that
Robohelp can run into problems with various version control systems. But in
general it works OK. I would add that we've been fortunate to have helpful
software engineers who are very CVS-savvy help us out when we've had
problems.

One of the big pluses with CVS is that it's open source, and therefore
free. It also can work well for geographically separated teams. Most of my
staff works at least part of the time from home over a VPN, and CVS works
pretty much the same way it does when you're all in the same office.

So you might want to add CVS to your short list of possible solutions,
particularly if cost is an issue.

Good luck,

<<Hi All,

I wanted to ask few questions regarding the usage of a version control
system with RoboHelp.

We basically have two motives for using a version control system:
1. To enable geographically distributed teams to work together on the same
project 2. To maintain different versions (and a revision history) of the
project files

Though, there is a version control system that comes with RoboHelp, called
RoboSource Control, but is not a very good tool when it comes to enterprise
level projects with geographically distributed TW teams.

The other option, which is recommended even in RoboHelp documentation, is
to use Visual Sourcesafe.

Has anyone ever used any other version control system, such as VSS or
Clearcase, instead of RoboSource control? Any suggestions over this,
especially for the usage of Clearcase with RoboHelp?

Regarding the usage of a version control system for geographically
distributed teams; has anybody ever used a multisite version control
system, such as a Multisite Clearcase or a Multisite VSS? Any
difficulties/problems faced in this type of setup?

Any suggestion over the usage of a multisite version control system
with/without RoboHelp?

Thanks
