Well, if you want to live really cheaply, you could try the Arthur C Clarke
approach. He's been sitting in Sri Lanka for years, getting royalties in
hard currency and not spending a whole lot.

I'm in China, not doing much Whirling (ayone with software or security
writing to contract out, please email), being an English teacher to
cover expenses. If you think tech writers are under-appreciated in
high tech companies, you should see the attitude of most university
faculty to language teachers.

Anyway, lots of people here make under $100 US a month. $400
would be a good starting salary for a new graduate, above the top of
the scale for a highschool teacher. You could live like a king on
$1000. A friend bought a 200 sq m (2200 sq foot) apartment for
$50,000, but in a poor location. Maybe $75,000 for 100 sq m for
something prime downtown. Luxurious seafront villa 15 minutes
from center of town, $125,000.

All you Americans could no doubt do something along these lines
by going South. Learning Spanish is a whole bunch easier than
Chinese and there's no expensive airfare.
