Re: punctuating the end of bullet points
Hi Technical Writers,
I have a question in relation to punctuation at the end of bullet points.
[snip]
I was going to:
• Tell you how to format bulleted lists
• Explain the different kinds of lists
• Expound on parallel construction
When you are evaluating a list for parallel construction, it is not
enough to check that a list consists of fragments. Those fragments
should be of similar grammatical construction. For example, they
might all be noun phrases, all be gerunds, or all be verb phrases
(predicates).
• Say something further about consistency BETWEEN lists, which really
should not be a requirement in any style guide
But I decided that an example would be more helpful.
Another approach to the multi-sentence quandary is to turn the sentences into clauses separated by semicolons and omit the terminal punctuation.
