Let me make this clearer if possible. A good manager is a catalyst, who
helps you attain optimum productivity as efficiently as possible. A bad
manager is a productivity retardant (I hope that's a legit word), who
introduces inneficiencies, hurdles, and bottlenecks.

Some very experienced managers can still be bad ones. They just get better
at defending their inadequacies. Some inexperienced managers can be really
great supervisors. And yes, training helps, but skills and information only
matter when there is the inherent talent to implement them wisely.

Being a good manager is about making wise choices - not smart, popular, or
the latest thing in management theory.

Then again, our definition of who's a good person is derived largely from a
projection (real or unreal) of our own personality.
