Hi Techwr-lers,
I am in the early stages of planning / researching an intranet based system for providing a documentation service to the rest of the organisation, and I was wondering if any of you had had similar experience.
First of all, to help with context, I am a solo tech writer in a medium-sized software development company that services a niche market. I work with the technical and marketing teams, providing everything from demo videos and online help to laminated product reference cards and system admin manuals. The organisation provides a 'total service' to its clients, which means that we have many different teams, such as sales, development, implementation, training etc.
All these teams have different needs and they all need to be satisfied by tomorrow, if not lunch time. It may sound like fun...
Anyway, I have been mulling over how best to address this stepping stone (that's marketing speak for hurdle / obstacle ;)) and one possibility I hit upon was to use the company intranet to provide an interface to my workload. In my grand vision, this interface does the following:
Enables people to enter an item into the workload / queue
Allows them to view a live, prioritised queue
Allows me to adjust the priorities and add comments / progress updates / links to drafts etc
I was thinking of using a web forms type of application, which I would have to code if there were no precedent. We use sharepoint portal server for our intranet, but its been in place for a year and adoption is still piecemeal.
Has anyone on the list got any experience of such a system within a similar context?
