RE: WAS: Did I overreact? NOW: Salary Info & Money Mag's Top Jobs
Subject:RE: WAS: Did I overreact? NOW: Salary Info & Money Mag's Top Jobs From:"Ron Hearn" <RHearn -at- cucbc -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- techwr-l -dot- com> Date:Wed, 31 May 2006 10:44:43 -0700
I recall working on a weekend years ago when an operator from the data
center stopped by my desk and after watching me work for a minute on an
operations guide, said "So you just type up the documentation". After a
silent sigh, I replied "Yep that's what I do, just type it up", not
wanting at that point to go into a long diatribe about audience
analysis, interviewing style, ya-da, ya-da. I am hoping that things have
changed from then.

You'll probably still have to explain many times what
a tech writer is and does. 99% of Americans, you tell
them you're a technical writer, and the only thing
they can think of is you're one of the people who make
VCR programming guides unreadable. :-)
Heck, inside a lot of hi-tech companies there are lots
of people who don't really understand what a technical
writer *does.* I usually them I translate from
Geekinese to English.
