Monica Cellio asked:

How would you rewrite something like this (in a
sys-admin or programming manual)? "If most of your users are located
in one facility, we recommend using the standard client-server
configuration. If most of your users are in remote locations, or if
any have slow or unreliable network connections, we instead recommend
using the multi-server configuration with the following modifications
[...]."

I would put the information into a table or bulleted list, which gets
rid of the need for "we" as a subject. It also makes it easier for the
reader to find the appropriate situation and the recommendations. (I
broke it down into three situations here, which may not be correct, but
you can still see where it's going.) You could even add in
cross-references to the configuration instructions without cluttering
things up to the point that it's unusable.

Select a server configuration based on the following recommendations:

Situation Recommended Configuration

Most users located Standard client-server
in one facility

Most users located Multi-server
in remote locations

Slow or unreliable Multi-server with the
network connections following modifications:
- XXX
- XXX

OR

The recommended server configurations vary in different situations:

- STANDARD CLIENT-SERVER--Used when most users
are located in one facility.
- MULTI-SERVER--Used when most users are located
in remote locations.
- MULTI-SERVER WITH MODIFICATIONS--Used with slow
or unreliable network connections. Modifications
may include...
