In the index some items take the plural, some the singular.
Your feelings are correct. Look at some cookbooks, a field
in which indexing has been pretty much perfected for more
than a century.

Radishes, 299.

Salads, 322.

but

Salad, Spinach, 335.

(Those from F. M. Farmer, 1906.)


Parsnips, 314

but

Tomato, about, 331; for salads, 104

and to add to the confusion

Rutabaga or Swedes, boiled, 326

(Those from Rombauer and Becker, 1975.)

Does this make sense? Using the plural in the procedure title seems to
make sense, but then using it in the procedure introduction doesn't. On
the other hand, using the singular in the index doesn't feel right to
