It is great that you found a workaround. But to clarify, chances are
embedded BMPs are causing the problem. Word gets flacky when the size
(in MB, not pages) gets large. BMPs are not particulary efficient
size-wise, so they can quickly cause a Word document to pass the
"flaky-point" (a highly technical term<g>). I am not sure where the
tipping point is for Word documents, but it is there.

to get around this.

From now on I will be sending the agency word files with linked
graphics (not embedded), using a trick I am just after learning. For
the current giant already translated file making their Word bomb, I am
going to have them delete the embedded images and add linked graphics.
