Another thing is the level of stress the reader is under when they try to deal with our publication. Some documentation is only consulted when the user runs into a problem. By then, the capacity of the brain to comprehend the material is compromised. A PhD under stress is not reading at the post-doc level, but probably much lower.

Of course, there are times when it's just too late to read the manual (How do we turn off that auto-destruct sequence again?!?!?). To turn off, press red button would work nicely.
