Yup. I mentioned that earlier, saying that a good portion of the people
(including myself) tend to go to the doc only when a problem arises. In
our field, if they're about to go on air, that can be a very stressful
moment.
Maybe those printed maps and grease pencils weren't so bad after all...

Another thing is the level of stress the reader is under when they try
to deal with our publication. Some documentation is only consulted when
the user runs into a problem. By then, the capacity of the brain to
comprehend the material is compromised. A PhD under stress is not
reading at the post-doc level, but probably much lower.
Of course, there are times when it's just too late to read the manual
(How do we turn off that auto-destruct sequence again?!?!?). To turn
off, press red button would work nicely.
