Perhaps. But consider who will most likely end up with
those low-wage "tech writer intern" and "file clerk/tech
writer" jobs and what they may turn out if someone who
has at least some knowledge of English and general
writing principles and the willingness to come here for
advice does not. I don't know any experienced writers
who are applying for those jobs, but they all seem to get
filled by somebody (and somehow *I* always seem to
end up buying whatever they're documenting).

And that's why I think we have no right to complain about the state of the
field when we encourage people who know little or nothing about technical
writing to try to find a job doing it at a company that also knows nothing
about what is good and what is bad -- just because they have a master's
degree in English.
