It has been at least 10 years since I managed a team that had sufficient
resources for each development group it supported to have its own
dedicated writer. Most of the time my writers and I are juggling at least
two or three totally unrelated projects at the same time, and I frequently
am on phone or email telling a manager whose developers are not giving
their required input that I am about to put their document projects on
hold due to lack of engineering activity and reassign their writer to a
waiting project whose developers are ready to go to work on docs
right now.

That doesn't work if the writers are responsible for more than one area. For example, I write just about anything other than Marketing/Sales--not to mention play website adminstrator and a number of other roles.

I'm know I'm not the only "Technical Writer" on this list who does more than just write.
