I replaced a technical writer once who knew little more than how to open PageMaker. As a result, when I arrived on the scene, most of the engineering, marketing and sales staff had a less than rosy opinion of technical writers. Fortunately, I had an engineering background. Within a few short months, I not only had earned their respect, but was actively involved in technical writing and MARCOM functions.

I do agree that wanting to make more money is not
sufficient motivation. Someone who doesn't have a real
interest in technology is not likely to do the
continuing education that is necessary. Such people
would probably be better served going into MARCOM or
related fields.


I disagree here....if you aren't interested in technology, going into MARCOM or related fields will do neither you or the company you work for any good. If you aren't interested in technology, go to work for a company that is not involved in technology.
