If you decide to go the AuthorIT route, a word of warning:

When I used AuthorIT (which may admittedly not have been the most recent
of versions...), it would only ever allow a single 'active' version of a
topic or book. It wasn't really set up to handle multiple 'current'
versions of documents (for example, in a case where your clients are
using three different versions of the software, for each of which
patches and enhancements are still being released). The system by which
the version of the topic that was in a book changed wasn't entirely
intuitive, and caused a number of, erm, 'interesting' issues with the
wrong versions of topics ending up in books after those topics had been
edited.

Newer versions of AuthorIT may have solved this problem, but it's worth
knowing +exactly+ how its versioning system works before you start, to
prevent horrible last-minute ostrich-ups*.
