Whatever happened to integrity and commitment in business? File this under Ethics in Technical Communication.

I feel your pain; however, having be screwed several times by larger companies that agreed to a one year contract only to toss me and hundreds of others out on the street after only a couple months of work, I have to agree with the group that says you have to look out for yourself first. If you can guarantee that your contract will not be broken by the company you are doing the work for, or if you can guarantee that your employee will be paid for the agreed contract duration even if it is cut short, and if you are paying a livable wage, then you should have no worry. If you can't, then don't get angry at workers wanting to protect their financial future. The first cancellation nearly cost me my home. At least I was better prepared for the second time it happened....although it also came out of the blue. (The company was in the process of hiring additional writers when everyone was axed.)

So, the problem is not ethics in Technical Communication; the problem is ethics and integrity in the businesses hiring technical communicators.

My two-cents.
