A lot depends on what the "agreement" is. Did you sign up agreeing to work through some project milestone (like a release)? Or did you sign up agreeing to work for a certain number of hours which could be extended?

To my mind, these are very different situations.

I would never walk out on a deadline-driven driven project. (Well, if it slipped a huge amount from 6 weeks to 6 months I might renegotiate.) I would, however, have no compunction about giving notice on an unbounded contract. Just because I took on some work doesn't mean that I am bound forever. I'm not an indentured servant.

So, I guess for me, the old standby response applies: It depends.
