This HIPAA course offered by CMS/CDC provided useful background for my
previous work in the Long Term Care industry. It also has implications
for most other Health related fields including Benefits Management, the
one to which I moved next and in which currently am.

IMHO, however, requests to this list for comments on domain specific
certification likely result in similar comments to those regarding TW
certification. Certainly, it doesn't hurt to mill through a couple of
courses that relate to the industry you are targeting but unless you are
aiming to be Technical Writer *and* SME, that much should be sufficient.

You are in very good stead, having had TW positions in Health Info
Services. As in any other industry, you should do well promoting your
previous experience as a selling point.

Best Wishes!

I've been developing ideas on what I can specialize in as a tech
writer in order to take my career to a new level. My last two jobs
have had a strong focus on health care information
management--building help files for applications that physicians use
in particular--and developing privacy practices for guarding the
information, and I did well at both.

...

Are there certification courses in knowing HIPAA regs, for instance?
How would I advertise or market these specialties to employers? How
can I make inroads in this field without being a doctor msyelf?

Ideas and advice welcome! :)
