Reminds me of last weekend. My wife and I were at a wedding reception.
During the meal at our table, we were talking about our day jobs. A
gentleman <who prefaced his comments with "I'm retired now"> said that
he had worked in the insurance industry as a programmer and then moved
into marketing. He continued to say that he had also spent many years
writing procedures for users so that they would know what to do with the
software. My eyes lit up.

How 'bout when someone - anyone - asks you what you do. You tell them
and they repeat back to you that you're a programmer or "software
engineer" or something.

Lots of the general public doesn't even know what a technical writer
is...
